Central Province · hill capital
Kandy
The last royal capital of Sri Lanka, set around a lake and home to the country's most sacred Buddhist temple.
Hill capital, Central Province → Hill-country town, Uva Province
A private transfer through the tea country from Kandy to Ella — the classic hill-country driving day, with time to stop at estates and waterfalls.
The journey
There are two sensible ways to do this: over the top through Nuwara Eliya and the tea estates, or the lower route through Belihuloya and Balangoda. Both take around half a day once you add stops. We choose on the day based on traffic, weather and how much of the scenery you actually want to see. The climbing roads are winding but rewarding, with estates, reservoirs and long views across the valley.
This route runs in both directions. Travelling the other way — Ella to Kandy — uses the same vehicle options and the same pricing approach.
Along the way
This is one of the routes where stops matter most. Tell us whether you want tea tasting, waterfalls or a proper lunch in Nuwara Eliya, and we will build the day around it.

FAQ
Both are good, and many guests do both. The train is famous and scenic but books out and runs on fixed times with a long, slow final section. A private car lets you stop at estates and waterfalls, keeps your luggage with you and gets you to your hotel when you choose. We can also combine the two.
Three and a half to four and a half hours of driving, plus stops. With a tea factory visit and lunch it becomes a full morning and afternoon, which is exactly how most guests want to spend it.
Yes, this is a common arrangement. Your chauffeur drives your bags and meets you at the other end, so you can enjoy the train without hauling suitcases up the platform stairs.
